New Technologies Helps to Enhance the Knowledge - Oscar Niemeyer Project

The computational market has become simpler the mixed medias and technologies promoting applications in several areas. The state of the art in interface man-machine is the virtual environments. This new kind of interface has been used in the most several knowledge areas, initially in the military and medical areas. The engineering and the architecture were extremely beneficiaries with the introduction of the computer technologies in its routine. In the construction industry, the projects could be presented in real time with interaction before its implementation, this has a more important role than the real static scale models done with rudimentary materials, because they allow the modification of the project with little effort. Besides demonstrating with more realism the future construction, it is good as marketing tool for these professionals. An area that is also using this new kind of interface is the world heritage that it should be preserved, and the use of virtual atmospheres for the reconstruction of these sites is viable. However, only the reconstruction is not enough, it is necessary to create a collective conscience for the preservation of these sites. The Laboratory of Virtual Reality of Federal University of Santa Catarina - Brazil, is part of a project developed in partnership between Brazil and France. In its first stage the project's main objective is to preserve the memory and works of one of the most famous architects from Brazil and renowned internationally, Oscar Niemeyer. One of this architect's works is Bras$ByM(Bia - patrimony of the humanity, in which Niemeyer had active participation beside urban planer L-$BaJ(Bo Costa. This development stage includes the creation of a CD-ROM multimedia with information of architect's life and works. There will be an option to the user to access the architect's works through virtual reality's interface. This interface will allow the user explore the architect's works. The architect's works spread around the world will be available to the user allowing him to interact with them. However the first work that will be presented through the virtual reality will be the Museum of Modern Art - MAC placed in Niter*$B1 (B Rio de Janeiro - Brazil. The user can just accomplish an interactive walk at the virtual work or to choose an exhibition accomplished in the museum that will be rescued through Internet to user's computer. With this project we hope to enlarge the collective conscience toward to preservation of the patrimony of the humanity.
