3D Archaeo-Copter

A realtime touring system is proposed for visiting a virtual ancient world. The system is named g3D Archaeo-Copterh which means that we can virtually navigate over the historical region as if we get on a copter. We now are building a virtual world of Nara region in computer where a great number of archaeological monuments have been excavated: Ancient tombs, villages and others. 3D Archaeo-Copter provides the virtual situation that you can fly over Nara region, as you like, and if you find any thing of interest on the ground from the sky, you can land the copter at the spot and walk about around the site. 3D Archaeo-Copter is built based on a high-speed visualizing software on a personal computer. 3D Archaeo-Copter consists of four modes; High-altitude(HA), Low-altitude(LA), Ground(G) and Walk-through(WT) modes. Starting Copter, it initially is in HA mode where the whole of the region can be seen as a coloured digital terrain map on the display. Selecting a type of sites, distribution of coloured spots is superimposed on the map. You can change HA mode into LA mode by pointing a position on the map: Copter initially displays a small region around the position pointed in HA mode. In LA mode, you can freely navigate over the region to make bird-looking at any small part of the region. Here, rough shapes of sites, such as ancient tombs or villages, can be seen on the display. If you find a site of interest through navigation in LA mode, you can land Copter at the site, that is, changing LA to G mode. In this mode, a plan of the site, archaeological information, examples of tour courses and so on are presented. Changing G into WT mode, you can get off Copter and make a walking around the site. Transition between the four modes can be made in the manner symbolically represented as follows: HA <--> LA<--> G <--> WT(Figure1)
