UNESCO WELCOMES FRANCESCO BANDARIN AS NEW DIRECTOR OF THE WORLD HERITAGE CENTRE

On 20 September Franceso Bandarin, an Italian architect and city planner, became the third Director of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, the Secretariat for the World Heritage Committee. Mr. Bandarin holds degrees in architecture and city planning from the University of California, Berkeley (USA) as well as Venice University's Institute of Architecture (Italy), where he has been a professor of urban planning. He has served as a consultant to the World Bank for cultural heritage conservation projects. Between 1989 and 1995, he directed the Consorzio Venezia Nuova, the Italian state concessionaire for the defense of Venice against tides and physical decay. Most recently (1995-2000), he has been Director of Special Projects and Cultural Programs for Jubilee 2000 in Rome.

Mr. Bandarin is the third director of the World Heritage Centre. The World Heritage Centre was established in 1992 at the time of the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the Convention. He succeeds Bernd von Droste (1992-1999) and Mounir Buchenaki (1999- 2000).
